Printing bulk PDF Files at one of India’s premier clinical pathology laboratories
A mechanism was needed that could manage the printing of more than 30,000 clinical reports daily. Test results showed that the 3-Heights™ PDF Printer was the most appropriate solution for meeting their requirements.
Application requirements
Dr Lal PathLabs serves 30,000 patients per day using a process involves forwarding clinical reports to patients in PDF format. This presented some challenges to the IT implementation team, as performance testing revealed inconsistencies and lack of speed when printing bulk PDF files on a multiplicity of printer types and configurations at the various locations. A mechanism was needed that could manage the printing of more than 30,000 clinical reports daily. Considering the workload and turnaround time, the most important goal for the laboratory was to achieve this in a minimum stipulated period without impacting performance of the application that generates the report data. The lab evaluated many third party applications for their speed and performance with printing PDF files. Test results showed that the 3-Heights® PDF Printer was the most appropriate solution for meeting their requirements.
Customer benefits
The lifecycle of a typical patient’s sample includes entry of test results, validation by a pathologist or doctor, and a final report. With the 3-Heights® PDF Printer now implemented downstream of the in-house application, Dr Lal PathLabs is able to deliver the reports in a committed time frame which is actually far shorter than what was achieved with the previous mechanism of printing reports through the application itself.
Implementation
At Dr Lal PathLabs an in-house application generates the source PDF files and sends them to their respective source folders. From there the 3-Heights® PDF Printer takes over management duties: it watches the folders, picks out PDF files according to pre-configured print queue threads, and sends them to the correct destination printer as defined in the setup.
